This Week's Term: AI Fluency - the ability to confidently and independently apply AI tools to drive measurable business results, transcending mere literacy to natural collaboration with AI systems.
The best way to understand AI fluency is through a language analogy.
Awareness is knowing Spanish exists. Literacy is using a translation app to read a menu and order food — it gets you by on vacation. Fluency is living in the country, communicating naturally, thinking in the language without reaching for the app. Mastery is writing poetry, understanding sarcasm, navigating cultural nuance.
Most organizations today are somewhere between awareness and literacy with AI. They know it exists. They can use ChatGPT when directed. They follow established patterns others have created. But they're still reaching for the translation app.
Here's the critical shift: we've all moved to Mexico. AI isn't a vacation destination anymore. It's where we live and work. A translation app won't be enough.
Google and Ipsos found in February 2026 that only 5% of workers are AI-fluent — meaning they've redesigned or reorganized significant portions of their work with AI, not just used it casually. But those 5% are 4.5x more likely to report higher wages and 4x more likely to report a promotion attributed to AI skills.
A critical component of fluency is trust calibration — knowing when to trust AI output and when to question it. In language, fluency means understanding when someone is being sarcastic, when a literal translation would miss the point, when cultural context changes meaning. With AI, it means recognizing confident errors, understanding model limitations, and knowing which tasks AI handles reliably versus which require human judgment.
Ohio State University defines AI-fluent graduates as "bilingual — fluent in both their discipline and the responsible, intuitive use of AI." That framing captures something important: fluency isn't about becoming an AI specialist. It's about integrating AI naturally into whatever you already do.
Organizations with mature AI enablement programs achieve 3.8x higher ROI on their AI investments and 67% faster deployment cycles. The data is consistent: technology is no longer the bottleneck. Human fluency is.

Your action step
Assess yourself honestly on the language analogy: are you at awareness, literacy, fluency, or mastery with AI? Then pick one workflow you do weekly and commit to rebuilding it with AI as a collaborator — not just a tool you consult, but a partner you think with. Fluency develops through immersion, not courses alone.
